Extramobile An ambitious project for the next 10 years

Created in 2024, Extramobile is an ambitious project led by the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) that aims to transform mobility by 2035. It’s not just a question of creating new public transport lines, but of rethinking the way residents and visitors to the metropolis get around, by promoting a multimodal and sustainable approach.

A mix of solutions for the entire region

The Extramobile project is built around a number of axes:

  • More walking and cycling: comfortable, safe facilities will be created to encourage the use of these active modes of transport.
  • New services for a more rational use of the car: electromobility, carpooling and carsharing will be encouraged, and an Ecobonus program will be set up.
  • Greater use of public transport: The performance of busy bus routes will be improved.
  • Easier intermodality: new multimodal hubs and park-and-ride facilities will be created to facilitate transitions between different modes of transport.
Beyond mobility

Extramobile isn’t just about improving mobility. It also aims to :

  • Strengthening the network: connections and complementarity with the existing network
  • Developing active modes of transport
  • Make the metropolis accessible to all: residents and visitors alike
  • Serve employment centers (sites of excellence), housing and schools
  • Provide an alternative to the private car and limit greenhouse gas emissions
  • Rethink public spaces to make them calmer
  • Support urban development dynamics
  • Enhance the attractiveness of the MEL.
Extramobile: a major asset for the attractiveness and influence of the region

The Extramobile project is a key element in MEL’s development strategy. By improving quality of life, fostering economic dynamism and boosting the region’s appeal, it is helping to make the Lille metropolitan area a European center of excellence.

  • Residential appeal: an efficient, multimodal transport network is a major asset in attracting new residents. Extramobile will facilitate commuting, access to services and leisure activities, and thus enhance the quality of life of local residents.
  • Economic attractiveness: by making it easier for workers and companies to get around, Extramobile will boost the city’s competitiveness. It will also encourage the development of new business districts and industrial zones.
  • International influence: Extramobile will help reinforce MEL’s image as an innovative, sustainable metropolis. In particular, it will make it easier to welcome conventioneers and city-breakers. It will also enhance the region’s international profile.
