Kandinsky exhibition at LaM 2026 An unprecedented retrospective

LaM – Lille Métropole Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut in Villeneuve d’Ascq – is reopening after 18 months of renovation. What is the highlight of this reopening?
From 20 February to 14 June 2026, the LAM will be staging an exceptional exhibition devoted to Vassily Kandinsky, co-organised with the Centre Pompidou Paris, which will unveil the personal archives of the father of abstract art for the first time in France.

Why visit the Kandinsky exhibition at LaM in 2026?

This Kandinsky exhibition in Lille is a major cultural event. Kandinsky and Images explores a little-known aspect of the Russian artist’s work: the role of photographs, scientific illustrations and press images in his quest for abstraction. The result of a collaboration between the LaM and the Centre Pompidou, this retrospective presents previously unseen archives never before shown in France, from Nina Kandinsky’s bequest to the Paris museum.

You’ll discover the secrets behind the production of the famous Almanach du Cavalier bleu (1912) and understand how Kandinsky, a founding figure of twentieth-century modern art, used images to construct his abstract visual language. A unique insight into the mental workshop of a genius of modern painting.

What makes this exhibition unique?

This is the first time that a museum outside Paris has presented Kandinsky’s personal archives in an exhibition of this scale. LaM, the only museum in France to combine modern art, contemporary art and art brut in a single collection, is the ideal setting for this retrospective, which brings together exceptional loans from public and private European institutions.

A programme that positions Lille Metropole as a leading European cultural destination.
