Created in 2024, Extramobile is an ambitious project led by the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) that aims to transform mobility by 2035. The aim is not just to create new public transport lines, but to rethink the way in which the city’s residents and visitors get around, by promoting a multimodal and sustainable approach.

A mix of solutions for the whole of France

The Extramobile project has a number of key elements:

  • More walking and cycling: comfortable and safe facilities will be created to encourage the use of these active modes of transport.
  • New services to encourage more sensible use of the car: electromobility, car-sharing and car-pooling will be encouraged, and an Ecobonus scheme will be introduced.
  • Greater use of public transport: The performance of busy bus routes will be improved.
  • Easier intermodality: new multimodal interchanges and park-and-ride facilities will be created to facilitate transitions between different modes of transport.
Beyond mobility

Extramobile is not just about improving travel. It also aims to :

  • Strengthening the network: connections and complementarity with the existing network
  • Developing active modes of transport
  • Make the city accessible to all: residents and visitors
  • Serve centres of employment (sites of excellence), housing and schools
  • Providing an alternative to the private car and limiting greenhouse gas emissions
  • Rethinking public spaces to make them calmer
  • Support the urban development dynamic
  • Enhance the attractiveness of the MEL.
Extramobile: a major asset for the attractiveness and influence of the region

The Extramobile project is a key element in the MEL’s development strategy. By improving quality of life, promoting economic dynamism and enhancing the region’s appeal, it is helping to make Lille a centre of excellence in Europe.

  • Residential appeal: an efficient, multimodal transport network is a major asset in attracting new residents. Extramobile will make it easier for people to travel between home and work, and to access services and leisure activities, thereby improving the quality of life of local residents.
  • Economic attractiveness: by making it easier for workers and businesses to get around, Extramobile will boost the city’s competitiveness. It will also encourage the development of new business districts and industrial zones.
  • International influence: Extramobile will help to strengthen MEL’s image as an innovative and sustainable metropolis. In particular, it will make it easier to welcome conference-goers and city-breakers. It will also enhance the region’s international profile.
